Chinese Trade

Most traders who knew about the unsatisfactory results obtained in the past in Chinese trade were prejudiced against Chinese business without realizing that they had dealt through Japanese or half-bred Far Eastern firms. When the Chinese entered personally into international business the foreigners gradually lost their prejudice but it took some time.

The fact that the Turks have not entered into business until comparatively recently is not at all due to laziness or indolence. It is rather due to two distinct causes which must be mentioned here to render full justice to the Turkish race. The first is a moral cause. The religion, the education and the Asiatic origin of the Turks have led them to look upon life more like a road that should be used to reach spiritual attainments than like an opportunity to obtain material gains. Spiritual attainments are eternal those who accumulate them in this life continue their progress in the other with a useful capital and with assets that really count.

Material gains are perishable and those who accumulate them in this life cannot take them into the other. Why should I therefore use my time and energy to accumulate things that will be useful to me only during this life which, after all, is only an infinitesimal part of my eternal existence? Accustomed to think and to reason thus the Turks have become a race indifferent to material gains and ambitious only for spiritual gains, and they have naturally enough disdained business. In fact, they have for centuries looked down upon commerce and finance and have purposely avoided competing in these activities with the less spiritual but far more materialistic non Turkish elements of the Near East.

Sultan Mehemet IV

The second cause is political or historical. At the time of the conquest of Constantinople nearly six centuries ago, and when for the first time Turkey acquired to her misfortune a large non Turkish population, Sultan Mehemet IV. desired to give a proof of his magnanimity and, in a spirit of justice, not only recognized the entire freedom of religion of the newly subjected non Turkish races, but even exempted them from all duties towards the state.

The non-Turkish elements were only called upon to pay a yearly tribute to the Empire and outside of this were left entirely free to look after themselves. When it is realized that these religious and political privileges were graciously granted by the Turks to conquered races generations before the Spanish Inquisition when the Christian conquerors of Spain tried to impose Christianity on the conquered Arabs and Hebrews through hair-raising tortures and centuries before the religious wars of Europe when Catholic and Protestant majorities tried to impose their individual dogma upon each other through massacres and torture without considering racial or even family ties the broadmindedness and justice of the Turkish conquerors becomes apparent.

Mexico’s National Days and festivals

Mexico’s culture is rich, colourful and vibrant, influenced by its ancient civilisations such as the Aztec and Maya as well as European colonisation. It is unique and probably one of the most fascinating cultures in the world.

The traditions and customs of the Mexican people are varied and diverse. They are proud of their native heritage and each region has its own cultural practices and celebrations. Many of the ancient traditions of their ancestors have been preserved making it a fascinating destination to explore. There are several indigenous groups within Mexico including the Nahuas, Otomis, Mayas, Zapotecs, Tzeltales and Tzotziles. These have all influenced the Mexican culture in terms of cuisine, medicine, rituals and language.

Music and dance feature heavily in Mexican culture. Mariachi music dates back to the 18th century and is well-known and loved. Traditionally mariachi bands consist of 5 musicians wearing ‘charro’ suits. If you haven’t already heard the song “La Cucaracha” (the cockroach!) then you probably will at some stage of your Mexico travels, as it is played by mariachi bands everywhere – on the street and in restaurants.

Folk dancing is also common throughout Mexico. The Jarabe Tapatio (Mexican Hat Dance) is one of the iconic dances of Mexico – probably the country’s national dance. It celebrates courtship and the dancing is performed around a sombrero.

Festivals and fiestas are extremely important in Mexico and celebrated even in the smallest villages. Every community has its own patron saint who is honoured with celebrations and processions every year. From the most remote indigenous village to the most sophisticated suburb of Mexico City – everywhere devotes at least one day a year to a fiesta – often many more!

So if you want to experience the colour and vitality of a Mexican festival or fiesta, then you will need to plan your Mexico travels accordingly, and this is where Chimu can help.

Here is a selection of Mexico’s National Days and festivals.

Independence Day (16th September)

This is Mexico’s most important National Holiday that celebrates Mexico’s liberation from Spanish rule in 1810. Mexico City is a great place to be for this festival with the Cry of Independence being recited in the Zocalo followed by fireworks, music and dancing.

Day of the Dead (1st & 2nd November)

During this festival, offerings are made to the souls of ancestors. Shrines are built in homes to honour departed relatives and there are often all-night vigils at graves. Market stalls sell pan de muertos and colourfully iced sugar skulls. At Lago de Pátzcuaro there is a beautiful torch-lighting ceremony, festive dances and a ceremony on Janitzio, an island in the middle of the lake.

Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe (12th December)

This is a religious festival held in honour of Mary, the Virgin of Guadalupe. Catholics make a pilgrimage to the Basilica of Guadalupe in Mexico City to see an image of Mary. This is probably the most important religious holiday in Mexico.

Semana Santa (Holy Week)

This is Mexico’s main holiday, a deeply religious festival that celebrates the resurrection of Christ. There are pilgrimages and processions. Head to Iztapalapa outside Mexico City where the festival is on a huge scale and involves buckets of fake blood!

Guelaguetza Festival (July)

If you are in Oaxaca in July, you may be able to witness this indigenous cultural event that celebrates the traditions and cultures of the region. Traditional clothing, folk dances and local foods are all part of this colourful event.

Fiesta de San Cristobal (16th to 25th July)

Also in July is the Fiesta de San Cristobal, held not surprisingly in San Cristobal de las Casas! Colourful and vibrant, this fiesta features fireworks, parades, marimba bands and parties and plenty of traditions of the Chiapas region.

The Turks were sufficiently bold to be the first to commence

Without delay, Kara George set out to relieve Losnitza, taking with him all the troops that could be spared in those parts of the country ; the people of Kragujcwaz, Smedcrewo, Grozka, and Belgrade, and some Cossacks. Luka Lasarewitsch also came from Schabaz, and Jacob Xenadowitsch from Wal  jewo. In the night of the 5th of October they all assembled within half an hour’s march of the Bosnian camp, and at once threw up an intrenchment.

The Turks were sufficiently bold to be the first to commence the fight in the morning; but they were speedily driven from their positions before the town into their larger fortifications on the Drina. On the same evening, the Servians fortified their position close to the enemy ; and the next clay a decisive battle was fought. They first attacked eacli other with cannon and musketry; afterwards they fought hand to hand. “Thus,” says Kara George, “we closed, and intermingled with one another; for two hours we fought with our sabres. “We have killed many Turks, and cut off many Turkish heads. Three times as many of their troops have fallen as of ours: a fiercer battle was never fought: the field remained in our possession.”

The Turks indeed had suffered so severely, that they despaired of being able to effect any thing further that year, and returned over the Drina. Kara George had also crossed the river, and hastened after them. On the day following, however, deputies were despatched by the Pacha, proposing that the Drina should not be passed by either party; which was mutually agreed.

“When the Servians now looked around, they congratulated themselves on having made a successful campaign. O’Rourke, when marching: to join them, had taken llania, which, since the preceding year, had been in the hands of the Turks. On his way back lie captured Gnrgusscwaz ; and Kladowo had surrendered. All these places the Russians gave over to Servian garrisons.

It is true that the bold schemes which had been proposed at first   the conquest of Bosnia, and the re establishment, in conjunction with the Montenegrins, of the old Servian nationality   were far from being accomplished. Servia had herself been in the greatest danger. For two successive years she had been obliged to fight for her existence; but was now, in consequence, far stronger than before.

She was not amiin limited to the Pachalio of Pelgrade ; on the contrary, she had acquired districts from all the Pachalics and Sandschaks around her: from AViddin, the Kraina, Kliutsch, and Zrnarcfa; from Niscli, the towns and territory of Alexinaz and Bania; from Leskowaz, Parakyn and T\rnschewaz ; from Xowipasar   the long celebrated cloister of Studenitza, from which a Xahia was once more named; from Swornik, in Bosnia   at least the districts on this side of the Drina, Jadar, and Kadjewina. A country by no means unimportant, fertile, and improvable by culture, had thus been wrested from the dominion of Islamism, and restored to the natives of the soil.
